Prague: What to know before you go

Prague stole my heart the moment I arrived. From its fairytale architecture to its vibrant culture, this city is pure magic. It’s easily one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever visited, and I couldn’t recommend it more—especially for a solo trip. Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or new to exploring on your own, Prague offers the perfect mix of charm, safety, and endless things to discover.

Praha, Česká republika

Here are some tips to keep in mind when traveling to PRague:

Praha, Česká republika

  1. Safe Solo City: I felt incredibly safe in Prague, even as a solo female traveler. The city is so welcoming, and I never felt uneasy, even wandering around at night. Of course, like anywhere, staying aware of your surroundings is always a good idea—especially in busy spots like Old Town Square and Charles Bridge.

  2. It’s Always Busy: Prague is always bustling. From sunrise to late at night, there’s a constant flow of tourists and locals. I loved the energy, but if you want to enjoy quieter moments at places like Charles Bridge (which I was obsessed with), head there early in the morning or after sunset.

  3. Make Reservations for Fine Dining: I was pleasantly surprised that I didn’t need reservations for most restaurants around dinnertime—it’s much more flexible than other European cities! If you want to visit a must-see spot or indulge in fine dining, definitely book ahead.

  4. The Beer is Unreal: I was obsessed with the beer in Prague. It’s fresh, cheap, and some of the best I’ve ever had. Whether it’s Pilsner or Kozel, you must try a local brew—it tastes better here.

  5. Transportation from the Airport: Uber is super affordable, and it is my go-to for getting to and from the airport without any hassle.

  6. Bring Cash: Prague is still a cash-based city, especially for smaller shops, street food vendors, and markets. While most restaurants take cards, carrying some Czech koruna (CZK) for smaller purchases is smart.

  7. Public Transport is a Dream: I loved Prague’s easy and efficient public transport. The trams, metro, and buses are clean and reliable, and the day passes make it simple to get around. I used the trains to get to my first international hockey game!

  8. Don’t Miss Blue Light: I loved Blue Light—it’s hands down my favorite bar in Prague. The cozy, laid-back vibe and great drinks made it the perfect spot to unwind after exploring. Order the espresso martini (you’ll thank me).

  9. Charles Bridge is Magic: I LOVED Charles Bridge—it’s such a magical spot, especially when it’s quiet. If you want to avoid the crowds, go early in the morning or after sunset. Walking across it when lit up at night was one of my favorite moments. I also toasted champagne with a cute boy on the bridge my last night, but that’s another story. ;)

  10. Czech Food is Comforting: The food in Prague is seriously hearty and delicious. Goulash, svíčková (beef in creamy sauce), and koleno (pork knuckle) were all so good. And yes, I ate the best beef tartar I’ve ever had…at a hockey stadium. I don’t understand it either.

  11. The City is Always on the Move: Prague is a city where you can wander, and you’ll constantly stumble across something amazing—a hidden courtyard, a charming street, or a cute café. It’s perfect for solo travelers because there’s so much to discover at your own pace.

  12. Don’t Forget the Basics: A simple “Děkuji” (deh-KOO-yee) for "thank you" or “Mluvíte anglicky?” (also-VEE-the AHN-glitz-kee) for "do you speak English?" goes a long way and always got me a smile.
